DIRECTOR’S NOTE
As the word "socialist" has, in some American circles, become known as a curse word rather than an economic theory, it's been interesting to revisit (however lightheartedly) socialism's place in the English-speaking world. In adapting Shaw's novel for the stage, Jeffrey Hatcher has made some adjustments to character and plot that underscore competing views on the role of money and class in our search for the common good. He has diverged from Shaw, but in so doing has undoubtedly made the story less a political tract and more a prompt for conversation. He's also built a beautifully constructed play with delicious language, sparkling characters, and playful situations that have been a treat to explore. And speaking of tasty treats, please join us in the lobby on September 17th for our regular opening night post-performance reception. We will offer refreshments and welcome the newest members of our Wake Forest faculty, and you'll be able to meet the cast, crew, director, and designers. Or stay after the show on September 24th for a panel discussion in the Ring theatre, sponsored by the BB&T Center for the Study of Capitalism at WFU. The discussion will include our special guest, Smash playwright Jeffrey Hatcher, as well as some smart and generous members of the Wake Forest faculty, including Ian Taplin (Sociology), Pat Dickson (Business), and Allin Cottrell (Economics). We'll share coffee and dessert, and hopefully have a spirited discussion about the themes of the play, followed by a Q & A session. Whether or not you can join us on either of those occasions, we hope Smash will bring you pleasure and lead to scintillating conversations of your own. Enjoy! |
